Born a girl, but raised to be a boy to secure her inheritance, Mary Read led a life of unusual adventure, startling boldness, and lonely secrecy. The European world of the 1700s had very distinct roles for men and women, but “Daring Mary Read” chose piracy, and in so doing chose to become a legend. This piece imagines Mary disembarking on one of her grand (and likely illegal) voyages. Though Ms. Read never held the title of “captain” aboard a ship, her leadership and courage have earned her an honorary title in this collection.

This piece is part of Em Campbell's "Legends" collection, which pays homage to legendary captains of history, literature, and pop-culture. Released Oct. 14, 2024.

Original watercolor painting measuring 3.5x4in (7x8cm), in vintage English brass frame. The frame has a touch of tarnish, which adds to the piece’s interest. Piece comes in vintage box. Watercolor on paper.Complimentary gift wrapping available upon request.
