What comes to mind when you hear the name "Blackbeard?" Fearsome, ruthless, perhaps even madness. All of these words—and more—became part of the legend of Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. So terrifying was his reputation that many ships surrendered at the mere sight of his flagship, Queen Anne’s Revenge, if escape was not an option. For anyone sailing the Caribbean during his reign, Evading Blackbeard became a matter of survival. To outpace him, only the fastest and most agile ships, like the small brig depicted in this painting, stood a chance.
