But what if this legendary figure had responded differently to Moby Dick’s attack? *What If Ahab Had Retired?* What if his close encounter with the powerful creature he hunted had sparked reverence instead of a desire to dominate? This painting envisions that alternate story—a retired whaler, now a simple sailor, content to fish for smaller prey, grateful to be alive and living a humble, peaceful life.
